Long-Haul flights
So.
As you may or may not know but we are all heading back to Australia to do a tour with the beautiful Bear in Heaven and The Antlers.
Both bands are based in Brooklyn, (where we live) however there is something kinda wonderful about flying back to Sydney to play with these guys…
but then there is the flight.
Long-haul flights- I hate them (tanya)
You can never really chose who you’re going to sit next to, I always pick a window seat as I am a fearful flyer and need to see outside. (go figure)
The food you know is always bad for you, you could chose the ‘healthy’ option but then what’s the point, it’s dry cereal with milk, which probably contains mainly cupboard and being a kiwi I need something more hearty.
The food generally makes me feel sick, I drink to much red wine and take to much Xanax which makes me wake up forgetting where I am, fumble my way to the toilet, eyes puffy and drunk, all the while breathing in someone elses infection.
Maybe that’s what the awfully named song ‘catch my disease’ means by Ben Lee.
Anyway I was trying to figure out the best way to NOT get sick on long-haul flights - outside of going japanese and wearing a mask, which lets face it is probably the most logical and healthiest thing to do.
If anyone has any ideas post them - or ways to make these flights less monotonous… share away.
Anyway will post another little ditty today - in NZ.

Did everyone have a Happy New Year?!!!

I thought i'd write some things down that really made our 2010 - another year, truly it's just our calendar that defines our years for us, we have Aloysius Lilius to thank for that ... interesting little thing is time.

Anyway ......

we found Derren Brown this year, I spent many hours watching him on youtube thinking he was really a clairvoyant pretending to be an illusionist, appears I got it completely the wrong way.

Also discovered Snuggies, so good, maybe they are only in America but in winter .... amazing - havn't got one yet but we plan on getting matching colours!

We all started living together this year as well that has been pretty fun, we've got a studio at home so we've been writing pretty much everyday - working on album 2 - Album 1 coming out this year!

I also found Skip James, a bit slow on the up take i know but woah, how amazingly beautiful is this man ... so incredible.

Snow!
I've never experienced snow before unless going snowboarding in NZ ... however the snow is absolutely amazing here as are the blizzards .... so surreal - until of course the snow turns black - that's not so much fun, but whilst white it's pretty fantastic.

So much more obviously in 2010 more to come, I kinda have a really short attention span so am going to go watch some more Derren Brown and enrol in an Illusionist course... fascinating!!!

There is no reward without great risk, so quotith Euclid or some other ancient Greek pederast. The same aphorism may be applied to my dining habits. Every time I step inside the bulletproof glass for a late night meal, my heart beat quickens--not only because I am surrounded by what seems to be G-Unit, but also because I will eat a meal so loaded with trans fat that my subsequent steps will be inside the cardiac unit at the nearest medical centre.
The food quality works much like sex appeal at a party. When dining at Crown's Fried, one must adapt the same "Beer Goggles" mentality. Whereas Crown Fried might taste acceptable at noon, it will taste much better at 3 am after drinking from the sweet teat of the PBR Keg.
The menu consists of mostly the aformentioned fried chicken. It is usually greasy and not hot, but again, perfunctory details. Who needs taste when you can breathe in the refreshingly pungent smell of urine cleverly shrouded in 99 cent store cleaning product?

Hi everyone,

sorry this blog has been long in coming, a lot of crazy things have been happening in SD world.

Firstly our album is almost completed, we are doing final mixes over the next month and then it's done, so very excited about this and also quite frankly petrified as well.

NYC has been treating us like a loving parent, we are still here and still loving this crazy city, coming home to Australia/NZ at the start of 2011 for gigs and tours and album release party.

We are about to embark on a tour with the lovely lads from The Charlatans!

We also acquired for the tour our newly found friend FRANK!

Apparently Frank has been all through America, and we are very lucky to have found him, he has wooden interior with fairy lights, and carpet on the floor as well as london gray fur seat covers, he's very rad.

we love him already and he's our newest edition to our band .... other news coming soon about new editions.

Woodstock

Hey all,

we went for a beautiful outing yesterday to Woodstock, 2 hours out of downtown Manhattan and incredible.

After bathing ourselves in water (finally) we came back and soaked ourselves in the amazing fire works of July 4th - then ate some burgers at Dumont Burger!

I'm sick in bed - it's Tanya.

I have a sore throat, and I'm bored, I always seem to get those bloody sore throats.

I've been reading on line about neurological disorders, just for fun and i've found a couple that sound so annoying ... here's one :

Obviously not life threatening, but seriously, touching, the wind, brushing your teeth - all that can result in those symptoms ouch.

I've also managed to familiarize myself with Sleep Paralysis over the last few nights, that's been absolutely terrifying and strangely intriguing at the same time.

Not sure if you know what that is but it's when you wake up before the brain has actually woken up, it's a weird state to be in and feels like a daemon is about to attack and for a while I believe that's what they thought was happening as for the most part you hear voices talking - not just standard conversation but voices on speed, talking at you, and you hear noises and see shadows, all whilst trying to wake yourself up from what can only be described as Endemons lullaby.

Terrifying.

And then there's Lucid dreaming, fascinating - does anyone lucid dream quite a lot, i'd be intrigued to hear stories, it's quite amazing, im particularly interested in sleep scientist theories behind Lucid Dreaming :

Sorry it's been a while since we've updated on our blog.

We have had two weeks off which has been just lovely, however now we are back to finishing our album and find ourselves in New Jersey for the next 10 days doing final takes and then mixing.

It's a pretty amazing studio, Neve desk, but go to their website - , they also have a Optigan : Jonti sits in a booth all day and just plays it ....

You can stay here, which is awesome as it means getting home from late nights isn't nearly as much as a hassle when your bed is in the next room!

There is a also a supermarket that stays open till 12am - and a bottle store - so it's perfect.

Attached are a few random photos from the studio - but we are definitely looking forward to the next path of finishing our album.

We have a gig coming up @ Mercury Lounge supporting the beautiful girls from Warpaint - 14th June - so come along - buy tickets before hand though as it will be sold out soon

they are pretty phenomenal!!

Hey all!!!

we have landed safe and sound in the city that never sleeps.

NYC.

SXSW was amazing.

It felt like the whole time you were being rubbed down by 5 massive dudes with sand paper that dipped you in lemon juice and made you say the alphabet backwards, if you failed they tickled you till you passed out.

The shows were great, however the first show we did was absolutely freezing, the first cold day since we'd been there.

They have this absolutely amazing building that's shaped like an owl - woah.

The second show was inside and was very cool.

We played after Middle East who were fantastic - amazing.

We definitely fell in love with a lot of bands.

There was also another amazing band from Denmark but their name escapes me so when i remember it I'll re-post.

There are two types of food in Austin.

Mexican & BBQ.

I never experienced BBQ as my only addiction is mexican - however that's honestly all you can eat.

So for 6 days all we ate were tacos, nachos, drink margaritas and sipped tequila!

There is some weird youtube footage that was shot of us doing some weird impulsive gig, so if i find that I'll show you that as well!

After those shows we flew to NYC - where we spent at least 2 hours on the tarmack - waiting for a storm to blow over; which it hadn't.

Bumpiest flight I've been on in a while, I swore something was wrong with the plane, I think I embarrassed Tim and ended up getting smashed on Vodka's which the flight attendant was only more than happy for me to drink.

They hated me.

Now we've been in NYC for 3 days and have a wonderful lawyer, a wonderful publicist and are playing some pretty rad shows in April.

Recording our Album in April as well, so looking forward to that.

ALIEN ABDUCTION

I've just been watching Communion.
Has anyone seen it?

For those of you that are unfamiliar it's a story about Whitely Strieber and his encounter with Alien Abduction.

(Larry King has to be the worst interviewer in the world)

It's a true story, based on his truth of course, so that's always subjective.

However, the story is compelling, he doesn't believe himself that he's been abducted and believes that he is having some sort of mental breakdown, or has a certain type of epilepsy, which can cause one to have hallucinations.
He does get tested for this and the results come back negative for the epileptic condition that can cause such grand hallucinations.

His character in the movie is played by my favorite Actor Christopher Walken :

who is absolutely divine, he allows you to indulge into the possibility that this could be true in the most realistic grounded way possible.
We are talking about Alien Abduction after all.
There are of course many accounts of this strange 'phenomenon,' whether based on humans in heightened stress, A.D.D, grand illusions of being 'special', mental illness or mere boredom with every day life there is something intriguing within this and something strangely real about it.

Also if you've ever spoken to someone that has been abducted by Aliens they have a very interesting and strong story - which comes with a conviction that you find hard to ignore - even though every part of your 'earth bound intuition' is yelling at you that they are crazy.

Perhaps Alien Abduction is actually human scientists testing humans in a way that they know they can get away with, after all we love fantasy, we love believing in things that seem larger than us ... God for example - whether this being is true or not - we have created this energy, we truly are incredible beings and our possibilities are endless, as I'm sure are the Aliens....

This blog really has no other point than to share with you my day reading about Alien Abduction.

Alien Abduction, makes for an interesting read on google, watch COMMUNION if you get a chance, if nothing more than to see Christopher Walken at his best - man that man is insane.

I hope to meet him.
Meeting an Alien, I'm not so sure, but then again, sometimes I think I"m in a band with 4 beings from another planet - so maybe they truly are among us.

We found out a couple of months ago that we got accepted into SXSW - this is pretty exciting, for those that don't know SXSW, it's a massive music conference in Texas, where you go and play and watch other bands play, drink and enjoy the Texan Sky...

So we are looking forward to that, there is actually a Party that they have in Texas I think in May/June...

Broadcast and the Focus Group

On Wednesday I returned to my Album Show on FBi for the first time in about three months. It seemed fitting to play a record by one of the incredible artists we watched while in the US, so luckily I was able to get my hands on a copy of Broadcast and the Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age (available to download via Warp). Jonti and I saw them perform at le Poission Rouge during CMJ, and I'm pretty sure that out of all the shows I've seen this year nobody else has surpassed them in measures of mind-melting-ness - the way we couldn't stand up straight due to the onslaught of stupefying visuals and sonics in perfect synaesthetic collision is still as fresh in my mind three months on as Animal Collective's show at the Enmore is from last Friday night. Broadcast's collaborator on this record is The Focus Group (aka Julian House) who is co-owner of Ghost Box Records, a British label who release music in the vein of musique-concrete, folklore, vintage electronics and hauted televison soundtracks from the 1970s.

I just learned yesterday that this record was named Best of 2009 by The Wire:

Back home!

Tanya and I arrived back in Sydney a couple of days ago, jet lag still sliding over. We miss NYC and all our new friends like crazy, but can't argue that to return home to Sydney summer is pretty much the same as winning a great prize... just like these great prizes that have been lauded upon us just in time for our return!

FBI 94.5 and Timeout Sydney SMAC Awards 2009 - Next Big Thing

It's really encouraging to know that these awards were voted by Sydney public - after a year of working hard it's awesome to feel the support of our peers. The awards ceremony was rad too, I got a chance to kill fifty birds with one stone and say hi to many friends I hadn't seen in a couple of months, all who were looking no less than smashing.

We were also fortunate enough to be selected to play a slot at Big Day Out 2010 in Sydney as a part of triple J's Unearthed - kind of living a dream had when we were 14 years old, not bad!

Oh and still speaking of awards/prizes, Jonti and Will are still in NYC under the guise of Jonti's solo project Danimals because of this... pretty fucking astounding right?

And so seeing as these guys are unexpectedly still outta town, Tan and I decided to reinterpret our songs for the gig we were booked to play at Oxford Art Factory tonight (!) with 'friend bands' Fergus Brown and WIM. At first a little unsure of how were were going to do it without the other kids, we've brought in the help of our producer extroadinaire Jono Ma + beloved Sherlock's brethren Graeme Pillemer to reinterpret the songs and turn them into hypo-techno-African-kraut jams using loop pedals, floor toms, Korg MS20, Roland 808 and Tanya's kitch (and fucking incredible) Lowrey organ. Can't wait, it sounded and felt incredible in rehearsal last night! Come!

THE OUTLIER INN

Hello!

We are nearing the end of our stay in NYC, and it's been absolutely amazing. We are so looking forward to coming back to live here next year.

At the moment we have currently left the city for a few days and are in a studio upstate with two lovely engineers named Josh Druckman and Peter Mavrogeorgis, both of whom we have developed a strong bond with - a loving affection based on a whiskey here and there as well as settling back and watching things such as Creep Show and Spinal Tap - and of course recording in between.

Liam has made us pasta which was pretty damn yummy and tonight we are making bangers and mash ... weeeeeeeeeee

We've also learned a lot about bleeding salmon and botox...

Hello!

A quick update for everyone... We are still in NYC, and still in one piece which is pretty remarkable. Some wonderful crazy things have been finding their way to our feet - into which we've slipped and begun walking to wherever it is they've decide to take us.

We have a few more shows here before we head up state to do some recording at The Outlier Inn.

Exciting news from home is that we were Triple J's Next Crop pick a few days ago - you can find an interview and more info here.

And also quite exciting is that our EP is now released in NZ through Inertia! Yay go buy it Kiwis! I'm pretty excited about this as I can't wait to show the boys my home town. We have also been doing some NZ radio interviews too. If you so desire you can now request our music on NZ radio.

Hi all,
Just a wee update...

We've been here for 2 weeks now - it all goes rather quickly.
We're taking a little break from shows for a the moment as our drummer Will has headed back to Australia for his brother's wedding, which is exciting for him... although it also means 24 hours on a plane and then another 24 hours on a plane back here to NYC with the rest of us - so we love him for it.

We have managed to find new nicknames for ourselves on the tour.

Jonti is now called VOMIT... this came from a night of free tequila, a Vice Magazine Halloween party and a taxi.

Tim we have nicknamed TERROR. You should see this guy play Ten Pin Bowling, it's like watching ballet, you don't even hear the ball hit the floor, it's like a whisper. It's effortless, he only stopped bowling strikes after he got way too cocky... that was pretty funny.

Tanya's been nicknamed TREE - after she keeps stopping to hug different trees as we are walking through Manhattan - which is kinda annoying, but it must be hard being a tree in this city as it's mainly concrete...

Liam and Will are usually just AWOL as they are rarely seen before dark.

As you may or may not know Sherlock's Daughter has made it through as finalists for the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards! The other finalists for music are Songs and Oh Mercy, both of whom we love...

Also to add to our excitement we've just found out we've been nominated for SMAC!

In light of this we want to say a quick but big Thank You! to anyone who has supported us.
We've had a pretty fun time this year playing shows and releasing our EP, and being nominated for two pretty incredible awards is really just quite fantastic!

We are currently in NYC - spending most of our nights out and not climatising to the difference in time at all. It's 14 hours different from Sydney time, so without really meaning to we've pretty much just kept with our regular body clocks' times to stay awake through the night and sleep... sometimes.

LA for 5 hour stop over: trying to find food, 2km walk from LAX to In and Out Burger it is.

We have been here now for 5 days, and I can only state that some truly bizarre and random things have happened. Whether it's the band or NYC I'm not so sure.

So far we are lucky that one of us didn't end up in prison. Another has ended up trapped in a toilet with some random girl that liked swapping clothes with anyone. Fortunately for her this particular incident required some form of clothing exchange... I'll leave the rest up to your imagination. We've seen the Midnight Juggernauts play, lost a knitted cardigan to find another knitted cardigan, broken a keyboard to be replaced by another keyboard, lost a member but found him 2 minutes before going on stage, lost two members to a night of drunkenness and dust... Our shows so far have felt amazing, and we can't wait to play more.

We'll be heading to the mountains to record in a couple of weeks. Above are some weird photos - I'm sorry that they are a bit crap, I'll make more of an effort now that i'm the official photographer....

Also it turns out TIM is a natural GPS!

HEY ALL,

Things have been pretty quiet on this blog, however we are back now after a few months of hibernating in our studio writing new songs and getting ready for our EP launch.

We are pretty excited to be playing with Megastick Fanfare and Kyü for our launch at The Hopetoun Hotel 27th August - it starts at 8pm, and I believe you can't get tickets in advance so go early we thinks.

It's going to be a pretty nice romantic night, so red wine all round.

Dont Call them Daughter...actually no, you totally can. Sorry. That was unnecessary.

Are they one person or many?

Sherlocks Daughter can mean many things. Sometimes it means Tanya Horo, lovely Sydney-based singer and guitarist, and other times it means Tanya and her band, William on drums and , Liam on bass, Jonti on sampler, nintendo, keys and guitar and Graeme on guitar, keys and backup vocals.

Where does the name come from?

According to Tanya, "We all have a fondness for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, so I asked the guys how they felt about being called Sherlock's Sons but it didnt quite work. Im not sure if Sherlock Holmes actually had any children."

And how did they get started?

Jonti tells us that, "Initially it was a space program between 5 clairvoyant aliens who fell to earth in order to develop sources of energy with that we could deliver our planets few survivors back over here. though, it turned out to be too much work so we decided to start a band instead.

Wow, creative. What else are they channelling energy into?

The band has just finished working on their Debut EP, with a release in the wings for later this year. Tanya is also one half of the electronic group Soma for Kinder, with Jono Ma from the Lost Valentinos. Apart from that, their MySpace blog contains postings on poet John Donne, photographs of the Dolomites and video clips of Cindy Lauper. We'd say their tastes are as expansive as their talent.

What about their sound?

Beautiful soundscapes meet nostalgic vocal melodies that remind us of lying down in the park with the sun on our face. Call us romantic, but Tanya's voice and the clever use of electronic instrumental backing makes us want to smile. Tanya tells us that, " a traveling bard once said that 'Sherlock's Daughter is like playing computer games in Fern Gully'"

I still dont get it. Who would you compare them to?

There's a definite early 1960s folk influence, in both the vocal styling and the melodies. There's even the teensiest bit of something mid-1990s but perhaps only because of the feedback. In fact, Sherlocks Daughter are difficult to compare because their sound is refreshingly modern and very, very original.
